Article: Feeding Guide: 0-6 months

In This Article:
  • Breast or bottle
  • How much to feed
  • How often to feed

Breast milk or infant formula is all that your baby needs for the first six months.

For the first two months or so your baby will most likely require a night feeding. With a very small stomach capacity (about the size of his own fist) extra feedings are required to meet his energy needs for rapid growth.

As your baby's stomach capacity increases and is able to hold more, your baby should be able to drop his night feed.

Your baby suckling at the breast stimulates milk production. The more he suckles the more milk you will produce. This is nature's way to ensure that you will produce the quantity of milk your baby needs.

If your baby is breastfed, then feed on demand. If you are formula feeding, your baby will need five to six formula feedings a day for the first four months. The total amount will be about 850 ml per day at two months and up to 1000 ml a day by four months.

Is He Getting Enough?

If your baby is having at least six wet diapers a day and is gaining weight satisfactorily, then he is getting enough to eat. It is important to check your baby's progress regularly with your healthcare professional. Your healthcare professional will be able to help you with all your concerns regarding your baby and will also weigh him and measure his length, head and chest circumference.

Tip!

You should never leave your young baby unattended with a bottle in their mouth – this could lead to choking. Always hold the bottle for your newborn baby while feeding.
