It's important to eat well and take care of yourself when you're breastfeeding - after all, your body is feeding your baby.
You don't need to eat for two while you are breastfeeding as your body adapts to ensure that you make enough milk for your baby. It's best to be guided by your appetite and to choose a wide variety of healthy foods.
Healthy foods can be put into four main groups - and it's important to include something from each food group every day. These are:
- Fruit and vegetables including dried fruit Grain products such as bread, pasta, rice or potatoes (try to include one at each meal) and remember, whole grain is best Meat and alternatives including eggs, chicken, fish, beans and lentils and red meat, which is rich in iron Milk and alternatives including yogurt and cheese
For more information see Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
You should be drinking 8 to 12 glasses of water a day to help boost your milk supply. Keep your energy levels up with healthy snacks, including sandwiches, fruit, cereal bars, milk or plain cookies.
It's a good idea to rest if you need to, as tiredness can aggravate even minor breastfeeding problems.
Tip!
Once a bottle of formula or pumped breast milk has been warmed it should be used within one hour and should never be reheated. Bacteria can grow in milk that has been left warm for too long and this could make your baby ill.
