By their first birthday, Toddlers are ready to explore even more tastes. Meals can be a time when your toddler tests a growing assertiveness and shows her curious side. Toddlers love to feel their food as well as taste it. Expect a mess!

Physical & Social Development Signs

  • Walks if one hand is held, then alone
  • Personality asserts itself
  • Expresses himself through action
  • Fussy eating begins
  • Wants everything now
  • Muscles firm and strengthen
  • Bones grow and strengthen, body fat decreases
  • Triples birth weight
  • Will attempt to pile two blocks if shown how
  • Responds to simple orders
  • Attempts self-feeding with fingers. Attempts being the operative word.

Feeding Tips

  • Toddlers tend to be less interested in food than before, as they discover the rest of the world and grow more slowly
  • Over a full week, your toddler's menu should have a balance of the four basic food groups
  • Continue to encourage you child to experience and enjoy a wide variety of foods
  • Likes and dislikes will change quickly
  • Include your toddler at the table during family mealtime, as they enjoy being part of the family
  • Make sure your child has a good source of iron such as Heinz iron-fortified Nutrios cereal
